London Bari suffered mixed week of Essex Senior League action

Newham manager Zakir Hussain was delighted to get the bragging rights over local rivals Clapton at the weekend.

The east London derby was played at Broxbourne Borough, but it didn’t stop 50 supporters attending the Essex Senior League clash.

Dan Crowie was the star for the ‘home’ side, netting a double, and Hussain was thrilled with the 4-3 win.

He said: “It was a derby away from Newham and it was fantastic to get the bragging rights in the end.

“We played Clapton earlier in the season and they walloped us 6-0, so it shows how far this squad has come since that match.

“It has taken a lot of hard work over the summer to get this squad together and I think the name change has definitely helped us in terms of recruitment.”

Warren Mfula scored the opening goal of the game for Clapton in the second period, before Newham hit back.

Dean Pennant curled in a free-kick and Crowie scored twice to put them 3-1 up.

Mfula reduced the arrears for Tons, before Vendel Nunes smashed in Newham’s fourth.

Jake Stevens pulled another one back, but it wasn’t enough to deny Hussain’s men the points.

The Newham boss could not provide an update on when they will next play at Terence McMillan Stadium, though.

He added: “There is no news at the moment on the stadium. I am literally not giving it my time.

“I am leaving it up to the people at the club and I am concentrating on managing the team and trying to get us more wins.”

Newham were beaten 2-0 Stansted last night (Tuesday), and have another away day at the weekend when they make the trip to Enfield.

Clapton, meanwhile, have another derby game on Saturday as they face local rivals London Bari at the Old Spotted Dog.

Bari shared eight goals with Takeley at Station Road last night (Tuesday), to bounce back after suffering a 1-0 loss to Bowers & Pitsea at the weekend.
