Clapton will turn away from the Essex Snior League as they make the trip to Woodbridge Town in the FA Cup extrapreliminary round this weekend.

The Tons will make the trip to Notcutts Park on Saturday (3pm) as they look to beat the Eastern Counties League Division One outfit and progress into the next round of the prestigious cup competition.

Jonny Fowell’s side will also be keen to win and get their hands on £1,500 prize money to help boost the club’s finances throughout the season.

They will go into the clash after making a winning start to the season as they edged a 1-0 victory against their east London neighbours Tower Hamlets on the opening day of the season.

A 93rd-minute winner from attacker Jeffrey Cobblah sealed the three points and got them off to a strong start.

Manager Fowell admitted he expected a tough test, but was pleased to get off to a winning start.

“I did actually, they’ve got some new players, Sipho Mtyanda, a few others,” Fowell said,

“They come at us quick with some good passing and a few good chances on goal.

“I think we dominated the game more so than them and the chances we had I felt we deserved the win.”

The boss also revealed it was a case of deja vu as Cobblah had scored in the final minute against AJ Ashanike’s men last season as well, adding: “Jeff scored the same time last season in the last minute and AJ come up to me and said ‘I can’t believe he just done it again to us’.

“I think the best time to score is the last minute of any game but I think we had two good chances in the first half that we should have scored and I think we had three chances in the second half.

“I think overall we deserved it on the balance of play.”

The Tons were due to welcome Ilford to the Old Spotted Dog for their second match of the Essex Senior League season on Tuesday.

The Foxes beat Woodbridge Town 1-0 in the extra prelimary round of the FA Cup last season and that should mean Clapton will go into the tie as favourites to progress into the preliminary round.
