What next for retired Ponting? Six of the best sporting career changes

It won’t have come as sad news to many English cricket fans, but former Australia captain Ricky Ponting’s retirement has got us thinking – what does he do next?

In an international career that has spanned 17 years, Ponting has amassed over 13,000 runs, guiding his country to dozens of historic and unforgettable victories.

But now, at the age of 37, retirement looms. A life without sport can be tough after a career at the very top, but cheer up Ricky, the world is your oyster!

Here are five retired stars who chose to take their careers in rather different directions…

Freddie Flintoff

Ashes hero Flintoff was forced to call time on his cricketing career due to injury at the age of 33 back in 2010. After venturing into TV and radio, Flintoff is now preparing to take his first steps into a career in professional boxing for a Sky1 show called ‘From Lord’s to the Ring’. While the cynics among us might view this as a mere publicity stunt, we’ll get to see how serious he is when he steps into the ring for a live fight against a professional heavyweight opponent at the Manchester Arena after four months of hard training. Now if only we could persuade Ricky to join him in the ring…

David Ginola

The Frenchman made a name for himself Tottenham during the 90s, when his flowing locks and scintillating skill took the Premier League by storm. And since his retirement in 2002, his career has included L’Oreal shampoo ads, acting cameos and, perhaps most impressively, cultivating fine wines. In 2008 Ginola received a silver medal at the prestigious International Wine Challenge for a Coste Brulade rosé wine produced at his vineyard in Provence. Impressive.

Shane Warne

Another option for Ponting would be to take tips from countryman and former Australia team-mate Shane Warne, who has enjoyed a rather colourful retirement. Warne has regularly popped up in the tabloids over the years and now devotes much of his time to a career in professional poker. Oh, and he’s also engaged to English actress and model Elizabeth Hurley.

David Seaman

The former Arsenal and England goalkeeper is a passionate fisherman. Formerly the most famous ponytailed athlete in England, a quick Google search for Seaman now throws up dozens of photos of him proudly cradling enormous carp.

Derek Acorah

Before becoming a professional medium, Derek Acorah - best known for his work on ‘popular’ TV show Most Haunted - was on the books at Bill Shankly’s Liverpool. He may have never made it beyond the reserve team, but he’s now among the country’s most *ahem* reputed mediums. He even claims to have communicated with Shankly from beyond the grave. You might excuse Shankly for not remembering who he was…

Julian Dicks

A cult hero at West Ham after two successful spells with the east Londoners sandwiched between a season at Liverpool, Dicks swapped boots for clubs and became a professional golfer after his retirement. Unfortunately for the tough-tackling West Ham legend, he was forced to retire from a promising golf career due to a knee injury.
