NewVic cruised to victory against Leyton Sixth Form, while a strong opening partnership led George Monoux College past Norlington in week six of the Essex Cricket Board’s FE Chance to Shine tournament at the UEL SportsDock.

Meanwhile, away from the action all of the players were able to see Essex’s County Championship Division Two trophy, as part of Essex Cricket’s efforts to take the trophy around the county and showcase it to all levels of the cricketing pathway, from the top players down to the local communities.

George Monoux got the action started, winning the toss and electing to bowl against Norlington, who lost opener Tallal Ahmed for a slow seven runs, before his replacement Ibadullah Lughmani was run out for six by Hamza Shakeel.

But at the other end, Sumeet Nandra knocked a splendid 26 runs from 16 deliveries before he was dismissed.

Ishaq Muhammad contributed a cameo of 15 runs, but was stumped off the bowling of Arbaz Ali, with the rest of the order falling cheaply.

Thanks to 39 extras, Norlington finished with a defendable total of 99 but Shakeel and Ali got off to a flyer in reply.

Shakeel knocked 25 runs whilst Ali struck 27 from just nine deliveries, before both players retired, to return later in the chase.

That return came quickly as their teammates couldn’t keep up the good start, with Qasim Ali caught by Nandra off the bowling of Ahmed for four and Yasser Syad (7) and Abbas Saeed (0) both bowled by Ulfat Hayat.

Shuaib Rasool was dismissed for a duck as well, before the partnership of Shakeel and Ali was reformed.

Shakeel added six runs to his total and Ali put on another four as they each finished unbeaten on 31 as George Monoux chased down the target with 1.2 overs remaining for a two-wicket win.

The second match was all about NewVic College, who lost Manav Patel for one run but then saw Sagar Joshi and Azhar Uddin build up a huge partnership.

Uddin was dismissed after scoring 28 from 16 balls, and Joshi reached 27 before he retired.

Abdullah Khan continued the onslaught, lashing 30 not out from 12 deliveries, including one boundary.

Sharjeel contributed as well with 12 runs, but Kalim Khan was bowled for duck by Bilal Imran, who had earlier run out Patel.

Joshi returned at the end and continued from where he had left off, ending unbeaten on 40 from just 15 balls, having hit four boundaries as NewVic reached 124-4.

Leyton never got going in reply as Kalim Khan dismissed Usman Majid, who was caught for a duck by Joshi.

Mangales Kaneswaran and Umer Farooq were both dismissed for four and then Kalim Khan got in the action again, bowling Imran for three runs.

Fareed Hussain was caught for three by Joshi off Marjat and then Abdullah Khan ran out Simraz Jafeer for six runs off 11 balls as Leyton were bowled out for just 26 run in the sixth over, handing NewVic a stunning 98-run victory.
