Newham under-16s celebrate winning the Essex Matchplay Cup final at Hutton

Newham under-16s lifted the Essex Matchplay Cup after a tense final against Gidea Park & Romford at Hutton on Sunday.

The east Londoners chose to bat first after winning the toss, but lost a wicket to the first ball of the match at the Polo Field Ground.

Wickets continued to fall, but three Newham batsmen managed to reach double figures – Hussein hitting 19 off 66 balls – as they were all out for 117 after 35 overs.

Patel struck in his first three overs in reply to reduce Park to 13-3, before a 38-run stand for the fourth wicket – the highest partnership of the match – appeared to put them in control.

Ur Rehman made the breakthrough for Newham, but Park still looked to be the favourites as they moved to 81-4.

The introduction of Jawaad Hussain proved decisive for Newham as he produced a stunning spell of 3.5-0-9-6 to leave Park shellshocked and clinch a memorable 16-run victory.

Paul Dawson, colts team manager, said: “This dramatic victory is testament to the hard work our youngsters, coaches, volunteers and managers have put in all season and I’m delighted their dedication has resulted in this victory.

“This marks the pinnacle of the club’s achievement this year with all seven colts teams having reached the quarter-finals or further in their relevant competitions.

“It also demonstrates the importance Newham Cricket Club places on youth cricket and we are committed to building the club from the bottom up, investing in the future to bolster local cricket and enhance the local community in Newham.”

Anyone interested in joining Newham’s colts set-up for the 2018 season are advised to keep checking their website at or come along to nets at East Ham’s Flanders Field on Tuesdays from April to September.
