Opponent says he will end 10-win run

Freddie Turner will taste his first defeat after 10 successive wins according to his rival Kris Agyei-Dua, who he faces on a sellout Goodwin promotion at York Hall on Saturday, writes Len Whaley.

Agyei-Dua, the challenger for the Southern Area light-middleweight title, insists: “I know Freddie is a good fighter, he’s a class act – but I will be taking his title on Saturday.”

Light-middleweight Turner, who is based at Canning Town’s TKO Gym after an amateur campaign that included spells at the West Ham and Peacock clubs, knows he must come through a winner at the weekend if he is to move on to bigger things in his career.

He obviously disputes his rival’s prediction, saying: “Kris is entitled to his opinion, but he will not be a winner on Saturday.”

The 25-year-old took the title when scoring a single point win over Aylesbury’s Nathan Graham at York Hall last year, after both men had hit the canvas.

Graham had won the title when beating Agyei-Dua, who retired with a shoulder injury in a return after their first fight for the belt ended in a 96-96 draw at the Bethnal Green venue.

Goodwin Promotions boast their best-ever bill at York Hall as they feature the British Commonwealth lightweight title clash between Richard Commey and Gary Buckland plus a strong undercard.

Miles Shinkwin and Joel McIntyre meet for the vacant Area light-heavyweight title.

And supporting contests are set to feature Andreas and Chris Evangelou, Ben Hall, Larry Ekundayo, Shane Watson, Michael Peat and Grant Dennis.

■ Frank Buglioni is looking to bounce back from his first pro defeat and become an area champion on the title-packed Queensberry Promotions show at York Hall on Wednesday, July 16.

TKO Gym-based Buglioini will take on Tichfield rival Sam Couzens for the vacant Southern Area super-middleweight title in a show screened live on BoxNation.

The 25-year-old Buglioni, a former WBO European champion, suffered his first career defeat to hard-hitting Sergey Khomitsky in April and said: “It was a hard lesson to learn, but I’m more determined than ever to reach my goal of becoming world champion.

“There are no excuses from me, I wasn’t at my best and I got caught with some good shots by him. Now I’ve got to prove my strength of character to myself and my fans that I can come back bigger and better.”

The show looks like a sell-out, with talented Mitchell Smith’s clash with unbeaten Peter Cope from Hartlepool for the vacant English super-featherweight title.

West Hammer Billy Morgan looks to get back with a victory over Michael Mooney in a light-welterweight contest having lost his unbeaten record against Michael Grant earlier this year.

Another TKO gym fighter, super-middleweight Tom Baker goes for his ninth straight win when he faces Mark Till on the show which also features Bradley Skeete, Gary Corcoran and George Kean.
