Two attractive 10-round clashes head the Frank Warren Box Academy show at York Hall tomorrow (Thursday), with some new faces – and West Ham’s 12-year pro campaigner Mickey Coveney lining up for action.
Seasoned scrapper Coveney, a 30-year-old whose record includes clashes with some of the leading little men around, gets another tough job when he faces Stephen ‘The Rock’ Ormond, a Dubliner who has lost just one of his 12 bouts on both sides of the Atlantic.
Peacock Gym-based Coveney is looking for revenge after suffering a seventh-round stoppage when the pair clashed in Scotland last year.
Another 10-rounder on the bill, which will be screened on the BoxNation TV channel, pairs super-flyweight rivals Ashley Sexton and unbeaten Liverpudlian Paul Butler.
Prospects on parade at York Hall include former amateur stars Tom Baker and Charlie Hoy, Mitchell Smith and Darryll Williams and newcomer Joey Taylor – a middleweight making his pro debut.
■ Mickey Helliet’s Hellraiser Promotions promise their usual all-action show at the Coronet Theatre, Elephant and Castle, on Friday, when former Repton amateur Ahmet Patterson will be looking to stay unbeaten in his fifth pro fight.
Isle of Wight campaigner Jay Morris meets Patterson on the show, which also includes Elliott Mathews, Dani Davis, Lee Owen, Lloyd Elliott and John Garton.
Craig Wyatt, Matt Goddard and Warren Fenn are also named on a packed programme which includes 16 contests at the south London venue.
When Terry Spinks won an Olympic gold medal in 1956 he was a hero to everyone in east London, but he hit hard times in later life. He was an ex-bankrupt with a drink problem and given just a few days to live.
