Manor Park boxer Umar Sadiq flew off on Monday as a member of the Repton boxing club squad making an eight-day trip to Lagos, Nigeria looking for better luck than he enjoyed on the same trip a year ago.

The 23-year-old light-heavyweight (left) boxed Muri Shango when the Bethnal Green club visited Lagos in 2011 and was announced the winner before one judge said he had made a mistake and the verdict was switched to Shango, enabling the home team to draw the tournament

Sadiq is one of six boxers in the party that will appear in two tournaments in the city, on a trip once again set up by former club member Dabs Edun who is now a prominent politician in Nigeria.

After two wins in their 2010 visit, the Bethnal Green club earned a win and a draw last year and will be put to the test in two matches this week.

The squad also includes club captain Ryan Pickard, Tommy Tear and Ohara Davies with guest boxers Karol Otulakowski from Stepney’s Broad Street BC and Ben Falaja from Middlesbrough.
