Young boxers get chance to make mark
Two of east London’s brightest young stars get the chance to make their mark on the global stage at the World Junior Championships in Ukraine this weekend.
Repton’s Jimmy Smith and West Ham’s Viddal Riley will be competing in Kiev, having proven their ability with national title honours.
The talented duo will be part of a 12-strong GB squad at the international tournament, which continues until next Sunday (September 15), after getting the all-clear from authorities.
A dispute had prevented English boxers from competing in earlier international events, but the AIBA authorities confirmed the GB team could take part in Ukraine and the squad will fly out after a final training camp at The Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
Bethnal Green club boxer Smith gets his chance in the 63kg division at the tournament, after joining the Repton title march in the National Schools and ABA junior championships.
West Ham hope Riley has shown impressive form since returning to the ring after a two-year injury-enforced break, taking an ABA junior title in May.
The fast-developing 16-year-old enters the World Championships at 80kg, more than 20kg above his weight class of two years ago.
