Newhams Johnny Coyle won the gold medal

Newham BC’s talented Johnny Coyle added a gold medal success to his impressive list when he scored three wins to take the youth 71kg award at the Haringey Box Cup competition at the weekend.

He clinched the individual title at the Alexandra Palace on Sunday after a local derby duel showdown with West Ham BC rival Liam Desmond, and was also named the best youth boxer at the international tournament.

Desmond, who had also won two qualifying bouts on the way to the final, made a bold bid to upset the odds, but Coyle clinched a 5-0 victory after four keenly-fought rounds.

A day earlier, the Newham hope had also registered a 5-0 victory margin after a classy display against Woking rival Joe Louis D’Santos.

Coyle’s closest call came on the opening day of the four-day Box Cup, which attracted hundreds of entries from all over the British Isles and Europe, when he faced Invicta BC rival Michael Seymour in a quarter-final contest.

It proved a competitive clash, but the Newham boxer landed the more effective attacks to clinch a 3-2 verdict from the ringside judges and set up his successful title challenge.

Then, at the end of the tournament, came the special award when the 18-year-old Coyle was selected as the best youth boxer overall.

Shah Shayan also sealed a gold medal triumph for the Peacock BC at the Haringey Box Cup, coming out on top of the youth 60kg entries on Sunday.

The exciting prospect from the Canning Town gym had earler shown good form when he outscored Dale Youth BC opponent Lorenzo Glasso.

His final test was supplied by Gosport BC’s Kara Abbassian who provided stubborn oppositon, but Shayan came through to take the gold medal.

His cruiserweight clubmate, Daniel Mendes, looked impressive as he slammed his way to victory over tough Artemie Cazac (All Stars), but had his hopes ended in his following contest.

Richard Slue from south London’s Fitzroy Lodge BC landed the telling shots to take the decision after a keenly-fought encounter.

Bradley Stone (Peacock BC) was outscored by Times club opponent Jules Phillips in their youth 54kg contest.
