Local fans cheered as Wadi Camacho and Ryan Taylor enjoyed victories as Matchroom Boxing’s opening show of the year at York Hall provided some entertaining action and top quality finishes on Saturday night.

The top action saw Belfast’s current Commonwealth super-bantamweight champion Carl Frampton produce a stunning right hand to flatten Scot Kris Hughes in the seventh round and former world king Robin Reid knock out Danny Cadman with another mighty right in the fifth.

There were no excuses from Cadman as he said with a rueful grin: “At least I was KO’d by a former world champion and I was doing okay until he caught me with a great shot.”

It looked a tight contest until the 40-year-old Reid, a 19-year pro, turned the clock back to his glory days as he produced the finish that knocked Southern Area champion Cadman rubber-legged, before the referee wisely stepped in.

Amid all the excitement, new pro Camacho, who had featured in up and down thrillers during his amateur days, was content to box his way to a points win over Ugandan Moses Matovu in his debut four-rounder.

The Canning Town fighter shook the globe-trotting journeyman with sharp punches and the tubby Moses, who has campaigned mainly in the USA, was clearly staggered.

But the new pro scored solidly on his 40-37 points victory, taking control of the exchanges at long range against his inches shorter rival.

“My trainer Brian Lawrence told me to take it easy and stick to my jabbing, so I followed his instructions,” said Camacho, who aims to prove an explosive addition to the pro ranks.

Also roaring their approval of another winner were the fans of local lightweight Ryan Taylor, who punched out his third pro win in four outings by stopping Robin Deakin in three rounds.

Taylor floored his rival, as he had Robin rocking in the opening round, but was shocked to take a count himself in the second session.

However, he stayed on top and his third-round body-punching decked the Crawley fighter twice before the referee moved in.

Also winning from Tony Sims’ Hainault gym, improved middleweight John Ryder produced an explosive right to send Polish stand-in Mariusz Biskupsi crashing in the second round.

Hard-hitting Ryder is even being suggested for a showdown with Southern Area champion Billy Joe Saunders, from Newham’s TKO Gym, and his fans chanted “Are you watching Billy Joe?”

But with the unbeaten pair guided by rival promoters, that clash looks a long way off.
