Archant

Fighting Talk by Johnny Greaves

I’ve got two lads on the same show at Grays Civic Hall on March 4 – one in the home and one in the away corner.

Sonny Whiting is boxing a debutant who will be selling the tickets and, coming from Grays, will no doubt have a lot of support on the night.

He’ll be against Tey Lynn-Jones in a four-rounder, another product of former English champion Ross Minter’s Queensbury Boxing League, which is a well-run boxing show in Surrey.

He wants to go out there and turn the kid over in front of his fans and when he sparred the other day, he was on cracking form, it was one of the best spars I’ve ever seen from him.

He’s a class fighter and on his debut he scored a wicked knockout against James Child in the last round, but it has to be one way or another – home or away – you can’t keep changing your mind.

If you get a couple of wins in the home corner, then you won’t get booked to be in the away corner. For Sonny, he struggles to sell the tickets so he wants to get a couple of away gigs in to supplement his income.

I actually met Sonny by chance when we were both enjoying a coffee break at a job in London and he was wearing a boxing t-shirt so we got chatting about that and his aspirations to turn pro.

He and George Hennin came along to the Peacock Gym one night to meet me and, as they say, the rest is history!

Both he and George are scaffolders from Kent working for separate firms.

I’m putting George in against Fonz Alexander, which is a tough, risky fight as he is an aggressive, forward-coming opponent who comes to win.

I retired just as he was getting started, but have been to a lot of shows with him on. People have said to me already that he’s a hard fight for George at this early stage of his career, plus it’s his first time doing six-threes.

George has shown his desire to push on and see how far he can go. I’m happy to put him into a risky fight because I think he’s good enough.

Against Fonz, who walks forward and lets his hands go, George will do well because he is a counter-puncher. He’s got the skills and the class to beat him all day long.

The Grays Civic Hall is a great venue, it’s compact, has a good atmosphere and a decent bar. It’s easy for the Kent boys to get to which helps with their ticket sales.

It’s also my birthday on March 4 so hopefully I will sell a few tickets myself and I’ll certainly have a drink once my job is done!

I don’t need anything for my birthday like a new shirt or anything like that, all I want is for both my boys to do well.

Johnny would like to thank sponsors The Peacock Gym and PR Manager Tim Rickson.
