Facey-Thompson impresses in Slovakia

Stratford’s Ashley Facey-Thopmson enjoyed the best win of his Para table tennis career at the Slovakian Open.

Although he did not progress to the knockout stages of the class nine event with partner Erik Higa, he beat world number six Juan Bautista Perez of Spain in his singles match.

Facey-Thompson, 19, came from 2-0 down to level and overturned a 4-0 deficit in the decider to square the tie against Spain & Hungary, after Higa had lost to Dezso Bereczki.

And he put up a brave fight before losing to Bereczki 13-11 in the fifth, after holding match points in his other singles match.

“That was the best win of my career - not just because of who he (Perez) is but because of the way I played,” said Facey-Thompson, having also beaten Polish number one Pawel Konstantyn 11-5 in the fifth.

“I still believed in myself, even at 2-0 down which is a different Ashley for me.

“Before if I was 2-0 down my head would probably have dropped, but this time I pulled myself up and played my table tennis and I’m really happy with my performance.”
