David Bolarinwa believes he has the ability to hit both the Olympic 100m and 200m A standards as he prepares for the Olympic Trials later this month.

The 18-year-old Newham and Essex Beagle currently lies 12th in the British 100 metre rankings and seventh in the 200m with season’s bests of 10.33 seconds and 20.78, that in turn a personal best, respectively.

Both are comfortably inside the standard required for July’s World Junior Championships in Barcelona, which Bolarinwa is eligible for, however it is an Olympic place that Bolarinwa craves, with further progress needed.

He must hit 10.18 in the 100m and 20.55 in the 200m to stand any chance of qualifying, while a top-two finish in either of the Aviva 2012 Trials, should that be the case, afterwards will guarantee selection.

It won’t be straight forward with British regulars Dwain Chambers and Mark Lewis-Francis among the favourites in the 100m and Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm in the 200m.

However Bolarinwa insists he isn’t fazed one bit.

“The main aim is to get the qualifying time for the 100 and 200m and hopefully go to the Olympics.

“I want to get rolling and get the A standards as quickly as I possibly can. Once I get the qualifying times that takes the pressure off and I can just get back into training.

“Once I do that I don’t have to think about them anymore and I can concentrate on the trials, training and being in great shape there.

“The A standards are definitely realistic, I ran 10.29 last year in the 100m and I didn’t really get the chance to run quicker than that due to weather conditions.

“This year anything is possible. I am a lot more confident this year going into the trials. I am so used to running against guys that are older than me.

“I rarely run against guys that are younger, so it is just preparing me for the longer run which is just senior internationals.”
