There will be five Newham Beagles in Gothenburg at the weekend looking for medals

Five Newham & Essex Beagles will fly the Great Britain flag this weekend at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Sweden.

Sprinter Asha Philip will be looking for her first senior international championships medal in Gothenburg after being selected as the only GB runner in the 60 metres.

The 22-year-old booked her place with an impressive win in the trials earlier this month where she clocked 7.15 seconds to storm to victory.

It is a remarkable recovery for the former World Youth champion, who suffered a career-threatening injury in a trampolining accident back in 2007.

She missed out on qualification for the London 2012 Olympics last summer, but is now in the best form of her senior career.

“I’ve been working my socks off because I’ve got such a bad history of injuries, breaking my leg and so on, so it feels great to be running fast,” she said after the trials. “I am going to the Euros and I’m going to try to aim for a medal.”

Also in Gothenburg for the Beagles will be Robbie Grabarz, who won the high jump trial as well as Steve Lewis, who competes in the pole vault.

Fellow Beagle Chris Tomlinson will be looking for his first medal at the event after a previous best of fifth. Tomlinson, who was sixth at the London Olympics, booked his place in Sweden with a second place at the trials.

Last, but certainly not least, London Olympic silver medallist Christine Ohuruogu will be in the British team for the 4x400m relay.
