Olympic gold-medallist Greg Rutherford and Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales helped launch a pop-up screen in Stratford’s Theatre Square on Friday.

Stratford Original Business Improvement District (BID) launched a pop-up screen to show the live broadcast of the World Athletics Championships taking place just a few 100 yards away in the London Stadium.

Rutherford made a guest appearance at the opening of the free event, creating great excitement among community groups from the Fire Cadets to a Salsa group, before pulling up a deckchair on the astro turf next to Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales.

Graeme Bright, Chair of Stratford Original said: “We are very pleased to see E15creen in place, giving Theatre Square a direct link to the excitement and buzz of the World Athletics Championship.

“Hopefully this will be the beginning of many more events of this kind in the Square for everyone to enjoy.”

In addition to live broadcasting the Championships from Friday 4 August to Sunday 13 August, there will be free fun family activities in and around the Square at various times throughout the days of the championships. Welcoming visitors and community groups, Sir Robin Wales said “I am always delighted to see spaces across the borough being used to bring people together. This is a fantastic opportunity for people not only to see top class athletics for free but to meet other people and enjoy some fun family activities. I hope as many people as possible take up the opportunity to visit the Square during the championships.”

Jill Lee, Managing Director of event partner GPM360, said: “We’re delighted to have partnered with Stratford Original to make this free broadcast possible here in the heart of Stratford, and securing major sponsors Puma, Toyota, Lexus, and Microsoft.”

Theatre Square is at the heart of the original Stratford’s Cultural Quarter, with the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Stratford Circus Arts Centre and the Picturehouse Cinema, as well as several cafes, restaurants and bars offering a wide selection of food from Caribbean to Sushi.

Gianluca Rizzo, Stratford Original BID Manager, said: “We want to make the original Stratford better for businesses, visitors and residents and the E15creen is only one of the many initiatives we have put in place to showcase what Stratford town centre has to offer.”
