Newham & Essex Beagles Mo Farah completed a memorable long distance double as he was crowned 5,000m Olympic Champion tonight.

The 29-year-old started the race at the back of the field, with a lack of pace in the field before gradually working his way through the pack.

In the early stages he swept round the outside, much to the joy of the 80,000 in the crowd at the Olympic Stadium.

With 1,000m to go the 10,000m champion held a strong second position to go on the shoulder of Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremeskel.

The slow pace turned the race into a sprint as it reached its climax, and Farah pounced with 700m to go to take the lead alongside Galen Rupp, the 10,000m silver medallist.

As the bell sounded there was still a large number of athletes who were in contention for the medals but Farah kicked on.

Despite the challenge of Gebremeskel as they ran down the home straight, the Beagle moved up another gear and crossed the line in a time of 13 minutes 41.66 seconds to put him in the history books as one of the few to complete the 5 and 10,000m double.

Meanwhile, Newham & Essex Beagle Mumin Gala, representing Djibouti, finished the final in 13th in a time of 13.50.26.
