Lewis relieved to get in action after exploits of Rutherford.
Steve Lewis was a relieved man after his comfortable progress through to the pole vault final.
The Commonwealth silver medallist cleared 5.50m at his first attempt to finish joint fifth in his group and secure a place in Saturday’s final showdown.
“It’s job done and I felt really comfortable. I’ll take some confidence from that going into the final,” said the Newham & Essex Beagles athlete.
Lewis watched on as room-mate Greg Rutherford took gold in the long jump, and he feels that has inspired him to try and follow in Rutherford’s success.
“It’s been a tough week for me watching Greg as he’s my training partner too,” he added.
“To see him win a Gold - and Robbie [Grabarz] win bronze and Jess [Ennis] gold too - I’ve been sitting in my room thinking, come on!”
