Newham & Essex Beagles Asha Philip helped Great Britain’s women book a place in the final of the 4x100m relay at the World Championships at London Stadium.

Philip led the quartet off in their heat, before passing the baton on to Desiree Henry, and smooth changeovers to Dina Asher Smith and Daryll Neita helped the British women come home in second place behind the United States, who won in 41.84 seconds.

Having won bronze at the Rio Olympics last summer, Philip said: “We definitely embraced the opportunity. None of us competed here in 2012 so to have this crowd is breathtaking. They really carry you around over every changeover.”

Henry added: “We’ve got a unique bond so it is all about bringing the speed. We know we are capable of fighting for medals so that’s what we are aiming for this evening.”

Asher Smith had finished fourth in the 200m final the previous evening, but said: “I’m always here for the team. If I’m needed in here, there are no hesitation. I was fine to run after the 200m so I was happy to run again with these girls.”

And Neita is hoping they can make it on to the podium once more, adding: “It’s been an early start so there is plenty to work on for the final but we’ll get the momentum and push for the medals.”
