Sprinter Asha Philip produced a stunning run at the London Games on Saturday to beat European Junior champion Jodie Williams over 60 metres.

The 21-year-old Newham & Essex Beagles athlete set a new personal best time of 7.24 seconds to finish 0.09 seconds clear of her GB rival.

Williams, who has been widely tipped for world stardom, was comfortably beaten in their second round race, marking Philip’s return to full fitness after a lengthy injury lay-off.

Club-mate Tope Nuga also competed, finishing in 7.61, just 0.01 seconds outside her pb, set in round one.

Another European Junior champion, David Bolarinwa, ran a personal best 6.80, as did club-mates Victor Nutakor (7.43), Ivan Pashov (7.34) and Jahmal Germain (8.78).

In the senior women’s 400m competition, 20-year-old twin sisters Francesca and Martina Xuereb set new personal best times.

Francesca crossed the line in 59.69, while Martina finished slightly slower in 62.20.

Matthew Roberts won the men’s high jump with a 2.15m clearance and Beagles club-mate Simon Phelan was joint-third with a 2m jump.

Eusebio Da Silva set a new personal best of 6.95m to place third in the long jump, while Nick Thomas won the men’s triple jump with a 15.73m leap.

Chioma Matthews won the women’s competition with a 12.90m effort.

In the shot, 41-year-old Gintas Degutis rolled back the years to win with a 15.81m throw.

While further back in the field multi-eventer Germain followed up his sprint time with a second personal best of the day, throwing 12.52m.
