The Newham and Essex Beagles sprinter won the 400m gold in the World Championships in Moscow, setting a British record in the process.

The 29-year-old beat off competition from cyclist Becky James, who came second, and third-placed triathlete Non Stafford.

Also in the running were cricketer Heather Knight, double Olympic equestrian gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin and world skeleton champion Shelley Rudman.

Previous winners include Sally Gunnell, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Paula Radcliffe, Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Ennis-Hill, who picked up the award last year.

Ohuruogu has also been nominated for Sunday’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year after winning her third major outdoor title.
