Young people sign Newham clean-up pledge

Young people put their words into action and cleaned one of Newham’s busiest streets.
Pupils at the borough’s schools and colleges have been asked to sign a pledge to keep the borough clean as part of a council campaign.
And they took to Prince Regent Lane in Plaistow to make good on their promise.
Joined by Young Mayor Abraham Male, Cllr Ian Corbett and Cllr Neil Wilson, the group cleared the road of chicken boxes, sweet wrappers, and drink bottles.
With the support of the council’s cleansing, waste and recycling team, the 15 litter pickers managed to collect a van’s load of rubbish.
Prince Regent Lane was chosen because it is home to Cumberland School and New VIc sixth-form college, and is close to Newham General Hospital.
Abraham Male said: “It’s great to have the support of young people on a campaign like this.
“Young people are perceived to be the main culprits of littering, but it’s not just specific to us.
“We all need to take a more responsible role in keeping our borough clean.
“I’m counting on young people to get their friends and family to put a stop to littering and help create a better borough for us all.”
