The Young Mayor of Newham election count has been cancelled after schools were sent ballot papers with mistakes on.

Students in the borough’s secondary schools and colleges had spent yesterday casting their votes to elect one of the peers into the position for a year.

But a spokesman for Newham Council said that ballot papers had an incorrect name on the list of candidates and another candidate missing from the paper.

He said: “We have decided to cancel the Young Mayor of Newham election count due to take place tonight at Stratford Town Hall.

“We apologise unreservedly to everyone for the disruption and unnecessary stress this has caused, but we have agreed on this course of action in the best interests of all the candidates and to protect the integrity of the election process.

“We will look at how this situation arose and look to make sure it is not repeated in future Young Mayor elections.”

The spokesman said that the council intends to reschedule the ballot at the earliest opportunity and would be in touch with schools and candidates once this was determined.

He added: “The Young Mayor election is only made possible by the time and commitment given to support this initiative by so many people.

“We thank everyone for their help and support both now and in the future.”

The Young Mayor scheme is now in its 10th year. Last year’s election saw 13,687 students aged 11 to 18 cast their vote – 73 per cent of all those eligible to do so.
