Strike action could take place over the Bank Holiday weekend

Londoners could face more Tube travel misery this bank holiday after union members threatened a “complete shut down” of the Underground with strike action.

Technicians based at the control room in Blackfriars Road, where they provide the power for the 270 station underground network, are in talks with union Acas today.

Unite the union said the dispute is due to 40 technicians being “duped” into inferior pensions among other workplace issues.

However Transport for London insisted any action would not impact on passengers as they have enough staff to cover a walkout.

If it goes ahead, the strike will effectively begin on Friday evening and end at 8am on Tuesday.

Unite regional officer Hugh Roberts said: “There is a real possibility that the underground could close down over the bank holiday weekend.”

Richard Jones, London Underground’s head of command and control, said: “Unite, TSSA and RMT have raised a number of issues with us around workplace and terms and conditions relating to staff in our power control team, all of which are either being addressed or we are happy to discuss.

“We are disappointed that the unions have chosen to call strike action and we would urge all unions involved in this dispute to continue discussions to resolve this matter without the threat of industrial action.”
