Young and old braved the rain to plant a range of vegetables at West Ham Park in a community event recently.

About 10 children and eight adults planted cauliflowers, cabbages, carrots, beetroot, potatoes and beans in a variety of containers, such as pots, raised beds and potatoes in tyres at Jubilee Food Garden at the City of London park.

Sue Banks, support officer at the park in Upton Lane, who was pleased at the turnout, despite the rain, said the range of containers used highlighted how food can be grown in a sustainable way in the smallest of spaces.

Sue said: “There were spare cabbage and cauliflowers available to take away to all the volunteers on the day to continue to grow at home. Volunteers in our regular gardening club will continue to look after the Jubilee Food Garden for the rest of the growing season.”

For more information about joining the gardening club, contact the West Ham Park office, parks.gardens@cityoflondon.gov.uk or call 020 8472 3584.
