Update: Unexploded Second World War shell found in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

An unexploded Second World War shell was found in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this morning.

Police were called to a construction site on the western edge of the park at 11.40am.

They then took the shell to be exploded in a controlled environment in Hackney marshes this afternoon.

Officers have now left the scene and a cordon put in place around the area where the discovery was made has been removed.

Full access to the park is now available.

A spokeswoman for the London Legacy Development Corporation, which is responsible for the park, confirmed that a shell had been found.

“It has been dealt with in liasion with the police and it has been removed,” she added.
