A topping-out ceremony was held to mark a key milestone in its progress - the completion of its concrete frame.

Vice chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee placed the last piece of concrete on the roof.

Project manager Mark Janko said work has now started on the outside of the ground floor, and handmade bricks will be put in place soon.

He added: “The building has been designed to be environmentally friendly and is expected to be completed at the end of the year.”

Work experience placements were secured for UEL students from the FDSC Construction Management course for six weeks, on site.

University bosses have promised an “attractive, inspirational and flexible learning and research environment.”

It will boast an advanced digital library, self-issue and return services and an automatic book sorter.

The interior will also feature a landscaped internal garden sat in the middle of a central atrium.
