Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) will go ahead with planned industrial action if last minute talks with London Underground bosses are unsuccessful.

They are due to walk out for 48 hours from 9pm – returning to work at the same time on Wednesday 30 – as part of a long-running protest against ticket office closures which bosses claim will lead to even more cuts.

A second bout of strike actions is due to take place from 9pm on Monday, May 5, lasting 72 hours.

Union and Tube bosses have been engaged in weeks of negotiations hosted by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), though they have yet to come to an agreement.

RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash said: “Staff are furious that while senior management pay and staffing levels are being allowed to roar ahead the jobs and pay of the core, station based staff who are the interface with the travelling public are being torn to ribbons.”

Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground, said: “We’ve moved a huge amount since the last series of strikes. I’m really totally bemused as to why this disruption to London is still being continued.”

He added: “Obviously I’ll try and do everything up to the 11th hour.”

The strike has also been condemned by prime minister David Cameron.

Transport for London (Tfl) has issued travel advice to customers (click here) and said it plans to run as many services as possible with extra bus and river services.

The strike will not affect the DLR, London Overground, Tramlink or National Rail services.

The following lines will be affected in Newham:

Central Line

No service will operate through the central area. Trains will run between Epping/Hainault and Leyonstone every ten minutes in both directions. These trains will not stop at Redbridge, Gants Hill or Wanstead.
