Marshalling aircraft will be among the skills taught to 12 recruits who are taking part in London City Airport’s first aviation industry training and recruitment programme.
The six month scheme, dubbed the Ramp Academy, has been developed in conjunction with Newham Council’s employment service Workplace.
Participants will learn the job of ramp services agents, a job which involves handling about 250 flights in and out of the airport everyday.
Other tasks include ensuring the safety of passengers embarking and disembarking aircraft and involvement in other aspects of the aircraft turnaround process.
Classroom based learning will be combined with on the job training and work experience to teach the recruits the necessary aspects of ground aviation operations and airfield safety.
Candidates were picked after being put forward by Workplace on the basis of their enthusiasm, commitment and resilience and will be considered for permanent roles on completion of the academy.
Lee Russell, director of ramp services, said: “We are committed to providing opportunities and helping to equip people with skills to develop their future careers. “The Ramp Academy does exactly that and will set people up for a career at London City Airport and across the wider aviation industry.”
Councillor Terry Paul, Newham’s mayoral adviser for skills and adult learning, said: “Workplace was developed to ensure local people benefit from local jobs and local regeneration. It’s a place where employers can place their vacancies to recruit quality staff.
“I am delighted Workplace has been able to help London City Airport find the right recruits for the Ramp Academy.”
London City Airport is one of the largest employers in Newham, with 27 per cent of the workforce living in the borough and 61 per cent coming from the wider area.
