At pubs around the East End trade is both up and down or unaffected by the Olympics.

At Bow Bells takings are up as foreign reporters and tourists are finding their way to the pub on Bow Road.

But at Dirty Dicks, at Bishopsgate, and at the Wentworth Arms, in Mile End, trade is down while business is unaffected at the Sun Inn on Bethnal Green Road.

Landlord at Bow Bells, Aaron Wilson, said: “It’s not made a lot of difference. But the pub was packed for the opening ceremony, which we showed on a big screen and in 3D.

“Our takings are up, about £200. We’ve had some tourists coming in and Brazilian reporters, who are staying at a hotel in Aldgate, who prefer going to a traditional pub.

“We hope to get more people during the athletics.”

But at the Wentworth Arms on Eric Street landlady Sheila Williams say trade is down 15 per cent.

She said: “We had a few media people and officials just before the Games. But it is very quiet now, trade is down about 10 to 15 per cent down.

“Everyone are being directed to Stratford Station, which I can understand, but it’s a shame since we’re on the doorstep of the Olympic Park.

“I blame the government for putting the fear of God into everyone telling people to avoid going here and there.”

But she said a few journalists continued to come and the father of US athlete Bridget Franek, who is competing in the 3000 metre steeplechase, had just been in.

At the Sun Inn on Bethnal Green manager Sean Kirby said their regulars were still coming.

He said: “Trade is about the same. I’ve not noticed a difference and no extra tourists.”

At Dirty Dicks, near Liverpool Street station, trade is down six to 10 per cent, according to general manager Ian Martin.

He said: “It’s a lot quieter than normal until after 10.30 and tourists start coming back from the Games.

“But the Islandic tourists have made our pub their main hop so hope to see more of them.”
