The arrival of the Tour de France is expected to cause major disruption to many aspects of normal life throughout Newham on Monday.

In addition to road closures and diversions through Stratford, Plaistow and Silvertown, all the borough’s schools will be closed on July 7, giving youngsters an extra day’s holiday.

Motorists are urged to try and avoid roads around the route, as diversions and delays are likely. They should also avoid parking on the route as vehicles will be towed away. Traffic will not be allowed to drive along or cross the route.

Bus routes in Newham will be severely affected. From 9.40am on Monday some bus services will not run, will be diverted or will terminate early. Train stations will be busier with extra visitors expected at Canning Town, Plaistow and Stratford stations.

If your refuse is due to be collected on Monday it will be collected on Saturday 5 July.

Patients are also urged to try and reschedule dentist or doctor appointments wherever possible as many surgeries could be closed and there will be no scheduled operations at Newham University Hospital. Accident and emergency services will still operate from the hospital. There will be no access to the hospital from Prince Regents Lane.

James Ross, Newham Hospital Director, said: “This is a hugely exciting event for London, but it will inevitably mean some delays in getting to and from our hospitals on that day.

“All hospital appointments will be going ahead as planned, but we’re asking patients and anyone else visiting the affected sites to allow plenty of time for their journey so that they get to us in good time.

“We’d urge everyone to plan ahead and do whatever is necessary to ensure they do not miss their appointment”.
