Calling all Newham residents, it’s time to “Spartan up” and get muddy.

In just four weeks time, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will host the first Reebok Spartan Race of the year; a 5km sprint over obstacles that will challenge competitors of all fitness levels by putting their mental and physical strength to the test.

If this sounds hard, well that’s sort of the point. But rest assured if you do cross the finish line there will be a pint of beer, a medal and an assortment of goodies waiting for you – not to mention some serious bragging rights.

For younger competitors a junior event ranging from 0.75km to 2km in distance and featuring up to 14 resolve-testing obstacles will give them a chance to prove their might.

Peter Phillips, managing director of Sports and Entertainment Limited and operations manager for Spartan UK, said: “The first 2016 Spartan Race at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will give local people of all fitness levels the opportunity to come together and take on the Spartan challenge in one of the UK’s most iconic sporting venues.

“We look forward to welcoming Newham residents to the start of the 2016 race season as the sport of obstacle racing continues to grow and become the largest mass participatory sport in the UK.”

The Reebok Spartan Race has been pushing motivated Brits to defeat its obstacle courses since first arriving in the UK from the United States in 2010, with over 20,000 competitors completing the course in 2015 alone.

Competitors can monitor their results on the Spartan database, as microchips tied to their shoelaces record times, allowing participants to improve on personal bests and track progress on a global rankings table.

With more than 240 events in more than 25 countries in 2015, Spartan Race has more than 1 million participants worldwide.

Click here to sign up for the race on Saturday, April 9, or for more information. The cost of tickets varies.
