Fire officers are investigating the cause of a blaze which damaged half the ground floor of a house in Forest Gate on Saturday afternoon.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to the house on Chestnut Avenue at 3.44pm. Three people escaped from the property before firefighters arrived at the scene, having been alerted by smoke alarms.

The fire damaged a bedroom on the ground floor and two rooms on the first floor. It is believed to have been caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials in a living room.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Always make sure a cigarette is completely out and is properly disposed of. Use a proper ashtray that won’t burn or tip over easily, and don’t take risks by leaving your lit cigarettes unattended.”

“Fortunately smoke alarms in the property went off and alerted the people inside so they could escape quickly.”

Fire engines from Ilford, East Ham, Plaistow and Homerton fire stations were called to the incident.
