Transport for London has launched a consultation to find out the public’s views on new river crossings in east London.

Four options have been put forward in an attempt to make it easier to cross the Thames between east and southeast London, including a bridge at Gallions Reach.

The upfront cost of this bridge would be among the most costly of the suggestions, with a bridge at Belevdere, a Gallions Reach ferry and another Woolwich ferry the other proposals under consideration.

The decision to hold a consultation has been welcomed by Colin Stanbridge, chief executive of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which launched the Bridge East London project, hoping to link Beckton and Thamesmead at Gallions Reach, earlier this year.

“East London has developed rapidly in the past two decades and will continue to do so in the coming 20 years,” he said. “If this demographic challenge is to be met, we need the right infrastructure in place to ensure residents and businesses in east London can thrive.”

The current consultation, which follows an earlier consultation held about 18 months ago, runs until September 12.
