Canning Town

Canning Town's Draughtsboard Alley area is being researched

Archant

A new heritage exhibition is looking for people who have connections to Canning Town.

Known as Draughtsboard Alley in the 1920s and 30s, streets in the area had tightly knit communities descending from foreign seamen who settled in the area.

Some married local women and raised families in the area.

Newham NDP is looking for people who may have lived there during that time, or who have family or friends who did.

The streets that are of particular interest are Cundy Street, Tidal Basin Road, Crown Street, Catherine Street and Victoria Dock Road.

If you have any photos, newspaper cuttings or any other memorabilia, contact Chiara McKenzie in the heritage team by emailing chiara@newhamndp.co.uk or calling 020 7474 6376 on Thursdays or Fridays.
