Scheme for Newham youngsters needs help

18:06 17 April 2014

More than £40,000 has been raised to get the ball rolling in a campaign to provide summer activities for youngsters.

The project, called Newham Giving, is led by charity East End Community Foundation (EECF), and backed by Newham mayor Sir Robin Wales. Businesses and other organisations are being asked to
donate and get involved with the plan.

Funds will go towards implementing an ongoing programme of activities such as play schemes and evening arrangements, designed in collaboration with young people, to benefit the community.

Tracey Walsh, chief executive of EECF, said: “It’s a great way for organisations and residents that want to give back to the local community to contribute in a meaningful way. There is a gap for more summer activities that compliments Newham Council’s current provision.

“Summer activities can improve motivation at school, provide a safe space for children that they might not have that at home and reduce anti-social behaviour.”

She continued: “We are so confident that this scheme will be successful, EECF is donating £25 000 of its own money towards Newham Giving.”

The mayor said: “Providing the best opportunities for our children and young people is a priority and the appeal of working with EECF is it’s the strong track record of funding Summer Programmes.”

Tracey added that feedback from this summer will be used to design programmes for the future, including during school holidays.
