Residents angry about proposed parking restrictions in the Boleyn ward have handed in a petition to Newham Council.

An initial consultation on a residential parking zone took place in October, with the second stage taking place in March and April.

The council distributed forms to businesses and residents in the area asking whether they would like parking controls in their street and approved of the proposed design.

Josie Alison, who helped to hand over the petition with more than 300 signatures on it, said: “I don’t understand why they’re doing it now when the football club are moving away.”

She was part of a group of residents who knocked on neighbours’ doors to inform them about what the proposals were and how they would be affected.

She added: “There’s people who don’t speak or read English very well and so didn’t understand the forms, but we had a resident who could talk to them in their language come with us.

“Some people said they were renting so thought their landlord should fill in the form instead, but we told them that they would still be affected if they lived there and had a right to their opinion being heard.”

The proposals mean residents will be given one permit and have to pay for visitors.

A council spokesman confirmed 2000 petitions were sent out, adding: “The council will now analyse the results and will write to residents and businesses who responded to the consultation as well as those who submitted petitions both for and against parking controls in that area.”
