Prime Minister David Cameron to speak at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Scottish independence referendum

Prime Minister David Cameron will call on the United Kingdom to unite when he gives a keynote speech from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this morning.

Ahead of Scotland’s upcoming independence referendum, Mr Cameron will attempt to summon up the patriotic spirit of the 2012 Games, arguing the whole country will lose if Scotland leaves the UK.

At a location carefully chosen to symbolise the successes of the whole UK working together as “Team GB”, he will argue the Olympic medals were won under the banner of a Union flag that was not only red and white, but also blue.

He will say: “It’s Team GB I want to talk about today - our United Kingdom.”

He will also stress that the decision on independence is “squarely and solely for those in Scotland to make”, saying: “It is their choice, their vote”.

The speech will be his most high-profile intervention in a referendum campaign he has repeatedly stated his desires to maintain the Union, but has refused to debate with Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond.
