Councillors have pledged their support for a campaign to make London a national park city.

The motion, tabled by Cllr Rachel Tripp and seconded by Cllr Patrick Murphy, sought for all councillors to declare their wards’ support for the scheme.

Cllr Tripp said: “The initiative is a campaign which aims to make the most of our green spaces and apply national park principles to a city space for the first time.”

She added: “The criteria they have chosen to set themselves is that they will declare London a national park city once 328 wards have declared their support for it.” Prior to yesterday’s meeting, the number of wards to sign up stood at 277.

Cllr Tripp said that the council “can be as involved as it would like” with the scheme.

Cllr Ian Corbett raised concerns about whether it was a case of “the middle classes depriving working class people of decent housing”, but he joined the rest of the councillors in voting unanimously for the motion.
