West Ham MP Lyn Brown has slammed George Osborne’s Budget claiming the Chancellor’s plans show a “disinterest” in Newham

In his penultimate budget speech before the next general election, Mr Osborne outlined a range of measures that included an increase to £10,500 for the tax-free personal allowance and a cut in beer duty by 1p per pint.

But those on the opposite benches argued the coalition’s plans are only helping the rich.

Ms Brown said: “This week’s budget showed just who in our society this Government is out to reward.

“People who are wealthy enough to be able to put aside £15,000 a year for a rainy day, those with a private pension pot, big businesses that get support with their energy costs.

“To those that have, shall be given more, seems to be the motto of the Chancellor. This is not what Newham needs.”

“We want a fairer approach to the economy, one that benefits the many, not the few.”

The Chancellor pledged to champion “the makers, the doers and the savers” of Britain as he outlined the most far-reaching pension reforms since 1921.

He presented his “budget for savers” with a package of help for pensioners as he revealed the economy is growing faster than expected.

But Ms Brown believes the government has failed to deliver for Newham.

“We need schemes to guarantee access to work, and to apprenticeships and support for families struggling to make ends meet.

“We need more housing, and more affordable housing. Above all we need the fairness that the Government neither can, nor will, understand.

“The Government is disinterested in Newham.”
