Heavy traffic in east London... City Hall campaigners call for areas to opt into 2020 Ultra-Low Emission zone

Traffic-polluted main roads in east London are being excluded from a proposed Ultra Low Emission zone due to start in six years’ time, City Hall campaigners claim.

A list has been drawn up of the 187 areas where campaigners say action is required.

These include Bethnal Green Road, the A13 Commercial Road and East India Dock Road as far as the Canning Town flyover and Upton Park.

London Assembly member Jenny Jones is calling for local authorities and the Mayor of London to extend the zone when it starts in 2020.

“The list of hotspots shows why we need more action to combat air pollution,” she said. “We must reduce traffic on these roads and also make sure that cars, buses and lorries passing through east London are as clean as possible.”

She wants areas outside the proposed zone like Bethnal Green, Canning Town and Upton Park to be able to opt into it which she says would help people living along the polluted main roads and children going to local schools.
