John Woolley was a month short of his 88th birthday when he died on October 17 last year. However a DJ at the Greyhound pub in West Ham Lane, Stratford, where he used sing mainly ballads on Sundays has released a CD featuring the crooner. It has raised over £1000 for Help for Heroes.

Mr Woolley, who served in the Royal Navy on board a minesweeper, and in the Royal Air Force, became known as Woody after singing the Woody Woodpecker song. He also volunteered as a bingo caller at the West Ham Social Club for the OAPs.

His widow, Irene, 88, who lives in Humberstone Road, Plaistow, paid tribute to him saying he was a wonderful man who never had a cross word with anyone.

His daughter Ann Wall said her father loved to entertain people and liked to raise money for war veterans. She said he was well loved at the pubs where he performed and would be sadly missed.
