Two people were seriously injured after they were involved in a hit and run collision with a car in Stratford this morning.
The victims, a man and woman in their 50s to 60s were struck as they used a crossing on the westbound section of the High Street, near the junction with Cam Road, shortly after midnight.
The car, believed to be a silver Lexus, collided with the pair. Police said it then stopped, and two people were seen to briefly leave the car.
However, they then got back into the car and drove away. The occupants are described as a man with fair or white hair and a woman with dark hair.
The two pedestrians were taken by ambulance to an east London hospital where they remain in a critical condition.
The Lexus was later found burnt out in Leywick Street.
Detective Sergeant Joe Lock said: “I am appealing for anyone who saw this collision, or the events leading up to the collision, to come forward and speak to police.
“The High Road in Stratford is a busy place at this time of night on the weekend so I am sure there are people who will have seen this collision.
If you have not already spoken to us, please get in contact - you may hold vital information to help trace those responsible.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 0208 597 4874 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
No arrests have been made.
Police burst through the doors of 13 suspected gang members today in a series of dawn raids to crack down on street violence.
