Parking spaces to be removed as part of Plaistow fire station rebuild

Parking bays close to Plaistow fire station will be removed once the facility is redeveloped.

Plans to strip out residential spaces and replace them with a new access have already been agreed with Newham Council.

Parking along Oban Close was judged to be “under-utilised” during the day and only used by parents dropping their children off at Cumberland School.

The school has parking spaces and drop off points within its own grounds.

Finalised proposals to revamp the 81-year-old Prince Regent Lane building have been submitted to council planners.

It is also proposed to cut the number of appliance bays, for fire engines, from six to three.

But this is not expected to have much of an effect given that only two fire engines are in operation at any one time.

London Fire Brigade bosses have promised construction - expected to start in June next year - will not disrupt day-to-day operations.

A temporary station will be provided to accommodate crews while the main building is refurbished.

In a statement submitted along with application, the organisation said new community facilities would be open to all.

“A multipurpose meeting room, storage room, kitchenette and toilets will be provided at the new fire station,” it read.

“These additional facilities will be available for use by the local community on a pre-approved basis and will be able to accommodate up to 30 people.

“LFB will not employ any additional station based staff to purposely support the use of these additional facilities.”

The Blue3 consortium has been selected as part of a £54 million private finance initiative (PFI) contract involving eight other London stations.

Assistant commissioner Andy Hicknott said: “These new fire stations will provide state-of-the-art facilities for our crews, with room for modern fire appliances and training.

“They will also be kitted out with community spaces that will allow members of the public to easily access vital life saving fire safety advice.”
