A parent and toddler group met at the Salvation Army in Wakefield Street, where organisers say fun “breaks down barriers”.

Around 30 children painted pictures, played with clay and sand, and prepared dishes at a pretend kitchen on Tuesday, January 28.

The two-session weekly event is run by Majors Jean and Tony Button, who charge just 50p per family and provide fruit and drinks.

Major Button said: “Everyone is very friendly. We get people from all religions.

“It’s good to provide somewhere for mums and children to go before they can start school.”

He added: “It breaks done barriers between races and religions as everyone plays together.

“All the adults come and just join in.”

The Buttons also run a messy play group on Fridays.
