Newham College students have been working with teams of McDonalds staff to create an educational DVD for use by teachers to illustrate green issues.

The DVD will include a drama and dance recital by students which tells the story of how McDonalds’ has helped to tackle litter over the past 40 years, as well as a number of film clips created by NEET students from the social enterprise project, Mobile Media Interactive, around the theme of recycling and litter.

The DVD will also include a video guide explaining how secondary school teachers can use the resource as an educational tool in the classroom, as well as some guidance for schools to use when putting on their own ‘green agenda’ performance. There will be two live performances of the recital itself, which will take place at Stratford Circus Theatre on the 10th of July at 2.30pm and 7pm.

Zulfikar Somji, a McDonald’s franchisee, said: “At McDonald’s we are committed to taking action on litter that damages our environment and are always looking for new ways to generate awareness around green issues. We are thrilled to be working alongside Newham College on this educational DVD and hope that teachers across the capital find it helpful when educating their students around important environmental issues.”

Caroline Hansford, Head of Performing Arts at Newham College, said: “We are pleased to be producing this piece of theatre with McDonalds to act as a legacy message to future local young residents. Not only have the learners had a great time working as a team to create the performance, their newly developed knowledge has led many of them to change their own recycling habits.”

In addition to holding larger litter events throughout the year, staff at the McDonald’s restaurant patrol the streets at least three times a day to collect all litter that has been discarded, regardless of its origin. McDonald’s is also the primary sponsor of Capital Clean-up, the Mayor of London’s scheme to help and encourage Londoners to work together to spruce up their city.
