Newham students to showcase their public speaking talents

16:54 19 May 2014

Groups of secondary school students will be going head to head with each other on Thursday when they take part in the Speak Out Challenge.

The event will give the Year 10 students from schools across the borough the chance to speak for two to three minutes on a variety of topics in different styles.

The event will be held at St Bonaventure’s School in Forest Gate from 6pm to 8.30pm. It is part of a public speaking training programme sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation. The training is delivered by the Speakers Trust.

All schools are offered the opportunity to train a couple of groups of Year 10’s (14-15-year-olds) in the art of public speaking. At the end of the training and following an in-school knock out process the competition moves on to an inter-school public speaking competition, the “Speak Out” Challenge! Regional Final.

The judging panel includes Dianne Smith, Interim Director of Children’s Services, Ian Larnder, Newham Borough Commander, Metropolitan Police and Dr Matthew Portal, Secondary Adviser at Newham Council.
