Teachers from across Newham have set off to join thousands of their colleagues in a national strike march over pensions and working conditions.

Although a group of about 30 gathered at Stratford station, other members of the National Union of Teachers had already set off for central London.

Many staged pickets at schools across the borough earlier in the morning and attracted support from passing drivers who tooted their horns as they went by.

Commuters at Stratford station also expressed support to union members who travelled on the transport system with their colourful bannesr and placards.

Miriam Scharf, NUT representative at Forest Gate Community School said: “There are many issues; it began with pensions then went to pay but the majority of teachers are out today because their job has become impossible to do well.

“We want a better education system and we want to be happy in our job.”

They will join thousands of colleagues in a march across London this lunchtime which will take them past Downing Street and Westminster.
