Archant

Half a dozen languages and cultures were celebrated at Royal Docks Community School’s International Day.

Storytelling, songs, poems, music, martial arts and debates helped reflect the diversity at the Custom House school.

The crowds were wowed by dance, drama and poem performances in Portugeuse, Angolan dialect and English by Salisbury Primary School-based African Kids.

Newham’s Iroko Theatre company gave everyone a taste of its new storytelling project and Mile End’s Capoeira group Ginga de Quilombo reminded everyone that this is Brazil’s summer, whether in Newham or at the Football World Cup.

Bengalis, as Newham biggest minority ethnic community, were well represented by a two hour performance by Tower Hamlet’s Udichi Shilpi Gosthi and Bengali International, Leyton.

Not to be outdone, the Romanca Society reminded everyone that Eastern Europe’s Romanians are some of the most talented new arrivals, who now enhance Newham’s international spirit.

The event was organised by Royal Docks Community School in conjunction with the Newham Partnership for Complementary Education.
