The Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, has been elected as the chairman of a cross-borough partnership.

The Local London group is made up of seven councils – Newham, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, Havering, Enfoeld, Waltham Forest and Greenwich – who have been working together across the past year on a range of issues.

They have come together across traditional party boundaries on policies including employment, skills and social care and have the ultimate vision of a devolution settlement for the sub-region.

Sir Robin said: “As a group, we have come a long way towards building shared understanding and establishing a common vision for the future.

“Across the seven boroughs there is agreement that a new settlement for our part of London is necessary.

“Only once this deal has been agreed can we collectively unlock the true potential of our boroughs.”

More than a quarter of London’s population growth over the next 14 years will come in the seven boroughs.

The next step for the partnership is to formalise the group by moving towards a joint committee arrangement and recruit a director to represent it.
